People ask me…”why be a Sister”…and my answer is always the same…”because I am a Nun”. Being a Sister provides me with a deep sense of self worth that balances my spiritual calling with the street theater performance art that is my self expression. I met the Sisters (Missionary Order of Perpetual Indulgence) at a Radical Faerie gathering. It wasn’t until the fall of 2003 that I started the next step of my Sister journey. I was on the board of RFD magazine at the time, and they were celebrating the 30th anniversary with a XXX fundraiser (get it..dirty 30). Dressed as a Postulant wearing a cow print romper and a black bra as a coronet I discovered the power of veil. Watching Sister Clara Cumpassionata auction was a wonder. Making ever item count for as much as possible and still finding a way to make everyone laugh. I went away deeply touched and began in earnest to begin the process of becoming a Sister. I took my vows that November, and manifested my first white face for New Years eve. The path hasn’t always been easy, and lord knows I may never get all of the glitter out of my house (or car, or wallet, or…the cat), but it has been an honor and a joy to minister and serve.
I am a worker nun. I am happiest when working on a project. I can be on the stage, and think I have learned the gift of auction, but I am most happy just working. I remind myself that we do the work that nuns have always done. It isn’t always glamorous but the reward in knowing you did something to make the world a better place is enough.
